About Maine

The state of Maine is located in the picturesque New England area of America, which is in the northeast of the country. The Atlantic Ocean borders the state to the southeast, while the northern areas are bordered by Canada. Maine is the easternmost state in America and is famous for its wonderful scenery, which is made up of rocky, jagged coastline, thick forests, lakes, trails, and low, rolling mountains. It also offers some of the best seafood in the world. The ocean affects the climate of Maine and it generally gets warm, humid summers along with cold, snowy winters.

Maine’s not very big when it comes to land area and population as it’s the 39th largest in size and 40th in population with about 1.5 million residents. The capital city is Augusta and the largest is Portland. Other popular centers include Bangor, Lewiston, Auburn, Brunswick, Sanford, Standish, Yarmouth, and Rockland. Maine became the 23rd state to be admitted to the union in 1820. The region was first settled by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans and it was found by the Europeans in 1604. The state fought against the British in the American Revolution as well as the War of 1812.

Getting to Maine isn’t a problem as the interstates will take you there as will the Amtrak train service which operates between Portland and Boston. There are also stops in Saco, Wells, and Old Orchard Beach. You can also travel between Rockland and Brunswick on regional routes. When flying, the main airports are located in Portland and Bangor. There are some smaller regional airports for domestic and local flights. Once there, driving around is a great way to check out all of the beautiful scenery.

There are plenty of things to keep yourself busy in Maine, such as taking a sea kayak along the historic northern coastline where you can view lighthouses and old forts. Along the south coast you’ll find the towns of Ogunquit and Kennebunkport, which are well known for the Victorian charm they exude along with quaint inns and bed and breakfasts.

In Portland, you’ll find a rich and diverse arts community, and a climb to the top of Bradbury Mountain will give you a great workout while soaking up the splendid scenery. In the capital of Augusta, the state’s history can be relived at the Maine State Museum and the Old Fort Western, which is one of one of the oldest in the country. Other attractions include beautiful fall foliage tours when the leaves change colour as well as excellent mountain biking, skiing, hunting and fishing.

Acadia National Park represents the only national park the state, and in New England actually. Some of the other popular outdoor areas include the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the Maine Acadian Culture, the Roosevelt Campobello International Park, and the Saint Croix Island International Historic Site.

There are no professional major league teams in Maine, but it’s home to minor-league hockey, baseball, and basketball clubs.

Maine has an abundance of excellent, fresh shellfish and seafood at most of its restaurants, such as lobster and clams, and you’ll also have no problem finding international dishes as well. When it comes to accommodations, there’s a lot to choose from, including inns, lodges, bed and breakfast, motels, and hotels. You don’t have to break the bank to get a good night’s sleep as they come in all price ranges.

The state of Maine offers exceptional scenery, seafood, historic sites, and coastline, making it an ideal place for travelers of all ages to enjoy.
